Highway to Hell.

Posted by E-Rock  Published in Because I thought you should know..., Local News, News, e-RAW-k

A brief recap:

February 2009, the Student Workers Club of Boulder High (Boulder, CO), petition the county school board to change the name of the school from “Boulder High” to “Barack Obama High”.   The school’s SWC president says

“the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth to commemorate both the role he had in making the election of Barack Obama possible and the social progress that has been made since he issued the emancipation proclamation.”

Boulder High principal Bud Jenkins retorted with an ever-supportive:

“With all due respect to the president,” the principal added, “of all the things in the world that need to be changed, Boulder High School’s name is probably way down the list.

This campaign came almost on the heels of Long Island’s Ludlum Elementary changing their name to, clevery put, “Barack Obama Elementary School”.  That’s right.  “The students wrote mock debates and watched the polls and were excited to do something they could feel pride in”, a parent said.  On another note, the schools population is 62% Hispanic and 36% black African-American.  I believe the remaining 2% of the students child prodigies must be somewhat divided between these three socio-economic groups:

Recently, the Young Conservatives of Texas spoke out against a bill which would rename a portion of Interstate 20 in honor of Obama. One of the YCT’s Directors had this to say about the bill:

“Finally, naming memorials for sitting politicians is not consistent with American traditions. We believe it represents the dangerous trend of Americans blindly worshiping politicians rather than diligently holding them accountable to the best interests of the nation.”

The above-quoted Mr. Ed Oden (if that is your real name), also a champion of the obvious, offered this interesting musing:

“Soviet Russia erected hundreds of statutes of Stalin while he ruled. In Saddam Hussein’s Iraq, one would drive down the Saddam Hussein Expressway to the Saddam Hussein Airport… You don’t find this in America.”

Hmm. Very poignant indeed.  I’ll have to keep abreast of that situation.

Fast forward… circa summer 2009, Orlando.

Well, while we didn’t build a statue, Orlandoans now have something else to bitch about.

We the people, of the City Beautiful, now have our own piece of history.   Congrats!

Apparently this has been official since late May, but no one I know has seen this, and the sign looks as if it was just built last week.   Moving on…

It was a unanimous vote, partly spearheaded by Orlando’s favorite racist hypocrite beeyatch, Commissioner Daisy Lynum. [For those of you who don’t know her career has been a little scuffed when it comes to the subject of racial lines, as you can read here and here.]

Anyway, I briefly heard about this a month ago, but nobody knew exactly where it was.  A quick Google Maps search on my iPhone (apparently the B.O. Parkway is in the MMS messaging update?) yielded no such luck:

obama pkway - iphone

Hmm.. Not quite what i expected.

No fear, just head down Conroy road to the “old” intersection of Conroy Road and Mission Road.  And you will be greeted by this:

obama pway sign

All 800 or so feet of it.   Ahh, what a fitting honor.  A street driveway with nothing on it.

“Yet”, says the City of Orlando.  They plan to expand on it.

Although anyone that’s driven on the 408/417/528/E. 50/Turnpike/W. 50/Church Street/Downtown/I-4/pretty much any street that’s not in Windermere, knows that that statement is bullshit bullshit (let’s be honest.)  And by the time that B.O. Parkway is “filled out”, America will be caught up in a maelstrom of some other razzle-dazzle politician, and we will be chomping at the veritable teat and/or teabag of whoever the next great worthless hopeless politician with enough panache to send us to the polls in record numbers, blindly just voting at the next great white biracial Muslim philandering draft-dodging smoke-but-not-inhaling eskimo female (just not Palin, please) hype.

Happy driving Orlando!  Oh, and click it or ticket!  That 0.2mi stretch of road is dangerous. Until we can get one of these up… take it easy out there.

The 21 Convention is Here… Are You Ready?

Posted by Dream  Published in Advice, News

Hey guys

Anthony Johnson here. I’m the newest guest poster for Orange County Concepts, and the director of the world’s largest convention for dating and lifestyle advice (mostly for men, but women are always welcome).

Each year I gather the world’s top “dating coaches” (and others with awesome content to share) into one location along with a large audience- this year finally breaking into the triple digits.

Every year, we film the event and release it 100% free in streaming high quality format right on the home page- actually true HD for coming 2009 footage.

It’s a unique event, with information you’re not going to find anywhere else, and never for such a fair price.

And as the title states, the third year is here (sort of). We’re kickin off next Thursday morning and ending Sunday night around 8pm.

Some past speakers have included…

  • Sinn (as featured in the best selling book The Game
  • Adam Lyons (the world’s “second best Pickup Artist”)
  • Braddock of Love Systems (recently filmed for The Tyra Banks Show, airing this week)
  • Mehow (as seen on Current TV and Young Hollywood)

In 2009 some new speakers we have attending (over 20 total!) that you may have heard of…

  • James Matador (of Vh1’s The Pickup Artist, Season 1 and 2)
  • Nick Sparks and Christian Hudson (of The Social Man- as seen on CNN)
  • Nathan (full time instructor for Real Social Dynamics)
  • Dj Fuji (Mehow’s former chief instructor)
  • Julian Foxx (famous for this video with Neil Strauss, Mystery, and Matador)
  • Drew Baye (world renowned personal trainer, speaking on body building and proper strength training)

Anyway, I’m not here to spam up the blog, but if your curiosity is sparked head on over to the official convention blog for further details including the full lineup, speaking schedule, hints at a few surprises, and of course, how to nab one of the remaining 9 tickets ($259.95).

Or, visit the home page www.The21Convention.com and take a look at the footage yourself for an excellent idea of what to expect this year at The Crowne Plaza of Downtown Orlando.

Thanks

-Anthony (or “Dream”, whatever floats your boat)

Director of The 21 Convention

orangecountyconcepts.com, and the rest of the Internet in slow motion after Michael Jackson death. Cultural impact is significant, news spreads by unconventional methods.

Posted by DJ Docta Dawe  Published in News

jacksoncollege.jpg

As the news broke today about Michael Jackson’s death many websites reporting the news were effected by the massive amount of hits they were receiving. The news topped updates on Twitter and caused huge spikes of visits to Facebook and other Web sites. My own twitter, and facebook homepages were a sea of Jackson comments, as I posted earlier. At one point I had two full pages of status updates related to Michael Jackson. Facebook’s people said that user “status updates” on typically a quick, short comment to a user’s personal network of friends and acquaintances, were running at three times the usual pace in the hour after the news broke. Such updates “are still well above our usual numbers,” after 5 p.m.

On the “google trends” website (http://www.google.com/trends), Michael Jackson related searches including “michael jackson died”, “michael jackson dead 2009″, “michael jackson heart attack”, and others were six of the top ten search requests. Two other noteworthy searches were “harrsion ford dead” and “jeff goldblum dead”, both rumors started through twitter status updates.

Micheal Jackson’s death broke Google for a time today. So many people around the world were typing the words “Michael Jackson” into the search engine simultaneously that Google News’ computer filters assumed someone was spamming the system. Instead of news about the King of Pop’s death, many frustrated users got an error message. “We’re sorry … but your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application,” the error message read. Google officials said the problem was fixed within 35 minutes.

According to TMZ.com, who broke the news of his death first, The internet hasn’t seen this kind of traffic “since Obama’s inauguration”. Throughout my own internet surfing today I have been unable to connect to, LATimes.com, TMZ.com, Twitter.com, PerezHilton.com, and most interestingly Theo2.co.uk. Theo2.co.uk is the website for O2, the arena in London where Jackson was scheduled to perform 50 sold out shows at starting next month.

And of course, our own orangecountyconcepts.com… I blogged about this story minutes after the first TMZ report making our site one of the first blogs to feature the story. According to TMZ.com, who broke the news of his death first, The internet hasn’t seen this kind of traffic since Obama’s inauguration.

Is there any other celebrity in the world who’s death could make such a huge cultural impact? Obviously it would be tasteless to mention who else could bring the web to a hault, but I believe that there are very few others, and would put Michael Jackson in the top 3 of this list. Every news station has abandoned regular programing and is now reporting in non-stop blocks about the King of Pop’s death. As I personally reflect, from the view of a DJ, and someone who has been in the music industry for years now, its hard to imagine DJing one night, at a club, bar, or even a wedding or bar mitzvah without Michael Jackson…. His music was timeless and bridged the generational gap. 750 million albums sold, that will NEVER happen again.

LA Times Now Reporting Michael Jackson has died. The World is shocked, and reacting. ::Update::

Posted by DJ Docta Dawe  Published in News

The LA Times is now reporting that Michael Jackson has died. CNN is reporting that CBS has reported his death as well. CNN still has not officially confirmed his death. Most every TV network has now said he has died, but that the reports are unconfirmed. This story is now on the front page of nearly every news organization website in the world. Wolf Blitzer reporting live on CNN is repeating that he has died, as live aerial shots from UCLA Medical Center show thousands of people arriving to the hospital to pay tribute.

A spokesman for the family, Brian Oxman just made a reference to “prescription drug abuse” as the cause of the situation, he continued on to say “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.”. He made this statement less than 10 minutes ago on CNN. Oxman can be seen in the picture below to the left of Jackson.

oxman.jpg

The social networking websites are flooded with people reacting to the news, famous and not so famous. Here are a few noteworthy tweets that have been coming in:

twittermj.jpg

The social networking sites like twitter and facebook, as well as sites like TMZ.com and Perez Hilton’s hugely popular blog have come to a slow pase. Hundreds of thousands of tweets and facebook status updates about Jackson have been pouring in over a very short time. TMZ.com reported the news first, and soon after was overloaded, and unaccessible. Second, the LA Times reported the news, and then that site went down. We took screen shots immediately when the story broke, which you can see below:

This is definitely one of those “Where were you at when…” moments that only happens a few times in a lifetime.

TMZ reports Michael Jackson has died.

Posted by DJ Docta Dawe  Published in News

TMZ.com has reported that Michael Jackson has died. They have not sited any sources, and this may be an example of irresponsible reporting as no official news has been issued. TMZ.com is overloaded with web traffic and is now loading sparatically. According to another source local LA TV stations are reporting he has died also… CNN’s Wolf Blitzer is reporting that Michael Jackson is in a coma (as of 6:25pm EST).

HOLY SHIT!

Posted by DJ Docta Dawe  Published in News

BREAKING NEWS!!

 jackson.jpg

Pop star Michael Jackson was rushed to a hospital this afternoon by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics. Paramedics responded to a call at Jackson’s home around 12:26 p.m. He was not breathing when they arrived. The parademics performed CPR and took him to UCLA Medical Center.

HOLY SHIT!!

Vince Carter is heading home, to central Florida — and he’s bringing Ryan Anderson with him.

The Nets have agreed in principle to trade their most dynamic player and top gate attraction to the Orlando Magic in exchange for three players, which will effectively help them clear roughly $18 million off their 2010-11 salary cap.

Coming to New Jersey are point guard Rafer Alston, power forward Tony Battie, and rookie shooting guard Courtney Lee.

THIS GUY WILL BE WEARING A MAGIC JERSEY NEXT YEAR:

Cinco De Crazy!!

Posted by DJ Docta Dawe  Published in D-D-D-D-DeeJay dLux!, Docta Dawe, Local News, Local Nightlife, News, OCC Events, industry dirt

So last night thousands of people were out on the town celebrating Cinco De Mayo. Our very own DJ dLux was seen around town looking something like this:

cincodelux.jpg

One can only hope last nights parties were as good as the notorious “Scoop de mayo”, which was last years captivating party held at everyone’s favorite UCF area bar “Knightly Scoop”. If you don’t remember last years chaos let me refresh your memory about this hugely successful event:

img_0188.jpg

img_0190.jpg

img_0230.jpg

As you can see maneuvering through last years massive crowd was borderline hazardous. No word yet on how successful “scoop de homo” **cough** “scoop de mayo” was this year…

police.jpg

In other related cinco de mayo news, some nutcase decided to go “cinco de psycho” last night on Church St. I guess he couldn’t take all the Mexican madness that was overtaking the city.

“Barb Jones with Orlando Police says a “man went nuts” on Church Street just as the clubs were letting out, slamming his car first into a parked car, then the Antigua nightclub, and finally some pedestrians. “At some point, officers engaged that driver. Shots were fired by the officers, and the driver of the vehicle was transported to ORMC. I do not have an update on his status.”

We believe 3 OPD officers opened fire, all have been placed on administrative leave while the FDLE investigates. None of the pedestrians were hurt seriously, but we are not expecting the suspect to survive. In fact, homicide detectives from OPD have been working this scene since the early morning hours. What is most unclear initially is why this man went on that rampage.”

Thanks to WDBO for that story. Word was later that this guy didn’t make it. I can already hear the cries of excessive force by the officers in this case, although it does seem a little extreme to swiss cheese up some guy who was probably drunk and acting a fool on cinco de mayo. I wasn’t there so I obviously don’t know the details first hand, but I have a feeling this story is just beginning. Anyways, all this excitement makes me happy I went cinco de sleepo early last night.

In related news, the MASSIVE GLOW PARTY  Thursday, May 14th @ Antigua won’t be disrupted by the damage caused by the “man who went nuts”.

 stereobackhalfweb.jpg

Was that a tasteless promotion? Anyways, this party is gonna be amazing, and I had to tie it into this blog somehow.

One final note… Following up on the Shannon Burke story, Orlando radio host Shannon Burke is now out of the Seminole County Jail. According to the Orlando Sentinel, Burke, 43, was released from jail Tuesday and is wearing a monitoring device. He was also fired earlier in the week from his job at WTKS, Real Radio 104.1 FM. Isn’t this the type of thing that would increase their ratings!??! Shannon Burke was arrested, and accused of shooting his dog and wife. He claims it was a mistake, and it seems pretty obvious of that by listening to the 911 call (see below blog for 911 call audio).

Return of The Mack

Posted by dLux  Published in D-D-D-D-DeeJay dLux!, DJ Deville, Docta Dawe, Eric Draven, Local News, Local Nightlife, Music, News, OCC Events, STEREO.

Let’s kick this blog off right and show you how awesome my week has been so far!!

 FUCK YEAH!!

FYI for all my iPhoners, if this happens to you, you have 2 options:

1. Take it to a random tech-savy cell phone repair guy around town and get it fixed for anywhere around $100-$150

2. Get completely fucked in the ass by Apple and have them fix it for $200

I myself chose the second option and don’t get it twisted, they merely replace the screen, you don’t get a new phone even though the new 2 year contract price is $200, the retail price of these phones is $399 and $499. So yeah FML and moving along…

THIS GUY is back in town tonight…

That’s right, Kid Millionaire is back in Orlando. If you were lucky enough to catch his set last year then you KNOW this is going be serious. After I saw his set last year he inspired me to not just be a DJ during sets, but to actually be a showman. Aoki doesn’t just play records and watch the crowd react, he reacts WITH you. If you ever caught any of my ‘crunk hour’ sets during the now infamous “Shit Show Saturdays” at (what was) Octagon you can see how he rubbed off on me.

Now let’s go to some music news, shall we?

Britney Spears stopped her concert in Vancouver recently because of the beautiful aroma of (legal) marijuana was in the air.

Come on!!! You’re going to charge that much for tickets and get mad cause people are on some feel good shit? Aren’t you the chain smoking Mom in every tabloid?

That’s what I thought. Nice try Britney.

In Billboard chart news…

Rick Ross has the #1 album in the country with Deeper Than Rap selling 158,000 copies in the first week.

Meanwhile DEFAME: Orlando’s new favorite rapper, Asher Roth, sold 62,000 to put him at #5. Pretty much everything else on the charts doesn’t matter.

Mixtapes, Mixtapes, Mixtapes….

I already put you guys on to the (fucking amazing) Kid Cudi mixtape last week, well this week we are going back to the trap with Gucci Mane. The Empire, the people responsible for the highly successful ‘Drought is Over’ series with Lil’ Wayne are back at it with GUCCIMANIA (brother).

 Torrent (Mixtapetorrent.com) / Direct

DJ Smallz, hailing from Tampa, also put out a Gucci Mane mixtape recently with a lot of the same tracks and less talking. DJ Smallz is responsible for what I think is by far one of the best mixtape series ever, Southern Smoke.

Torrent (Mixtapetorrent.com) / Direct

Meanwhile in local mixtape news, DJ Eric Draven released his mixtape a couple weeks ago and it has been picking up steam around the town.

Download (zShare)

Well thats about all I have for now but I was told by the bossman that I could only post this blog if I put this at the end:

That’s right, it wouldn’t be a Thursday blog if I (or someone else) didn’t shamelessly plug the party that has stood the test of time (going on 6 months, haters).

STEREO IS TONIGHT @ Antiqua

and in case you didn’t read it on Facebook, on here, or see the flyer I posted above there are FREE DRINKS TILL 12am.

I myself will be taking advantage of the $1 Miller Lites.

After 12 it’s 2-4-1 shots at the bar and FREE SHOTS when you hear the crunk horn.

My personal battle with Testicular Cancer…

Posted by DJ Docta Dawe  Published in Docta Dawe, News, Uncategorized

As many of you know I have been undergoing some personal health issues that have sidelined me. I want to make everyone aware of it, not so that you know what my situation is, but so that maybe I can make you aware of an often ignored or undetected situation. I know this is a entertainment/music/nightlife blog, but I feel it is my duty to use all my available resources to raise awareness to this situation, mostly because it affects the age demographic that reads this blog. I don’t mean to be a buzz kill, but one off topic blog out of the hundreds on this site won’t kill you, hopefully it might actually save a life.

This has been a very personal issue to me, but I have decided not to be shy about it. Not because it isn’t incredibly emotional or personal to me, but because this is bigger than my feelings. I had something happen to me this month that often goes undetected, or ignored, out of embarrassment or worry. I wasn’t sure how to deal with the situation that I was presented. I told my friends and business associates, and then made a few mentions about my condition over facebook, but I now feel it is time to be completely candid.

I am talking about my personal battle with testicular cancer. During 2009 there will be 8,980 young men diagnosed and over 360 young men will die because they didn’t find it in time. I am one of the survivors. That is more deaths than women in this age group who will die of breast cancer. But don’t let those statistics frighten you, testicular cancer is one of the easiest cancers to cure if it is detected in time.  There is a stigma and embarrassment connected with young men becoming more aware of their testicles. I am very fortunate that I noticed swelling in one of mine, and acted on it immediately. Symptoms are not the same for everyone, I had swelling, but that is not always the case. That is why a monthly exam is essential.

There is a very simple, painless, quick exam that you can give yourself once a month that could save your life. You can find the very simple instructions right here:

http://www.tc-cancer.com/about/self-exam.html

Think you might forget to do this on a monthly basis? You can sign up to receive a reminder the first of every month to do a self-exam. Sign up by sending a blank email to: menstuff-testicular-exam-subscribe@topica.com It’s free! Waiting and hoping will not fix anything, if you notice an abnormality, see a doctor as soon as possible, because when this is caught early you have a 95%-100% cure rate awaiting you.

Now please enjoy what may be the best PSA I have ever seen.
