DJ AM is the greatest DJ ever. He is the Michael Jackson, The Elvis, The Beetles, of the Technics. If you took a poll of every professional DJ, and nightclub industry person in America today and asked them who the most talented DJ is, AM would win hands down. His creativity was untouchable… He was a MAJOR and direct influence to my style, and the style of a whole generation of young DJs. He is the Michael Jordan of the turntables, every DJ wants to be like AM. The best club gigs in the world, the money, the clothes, the women, the cars. He had it all. After surviving severe obesity, a drug and alcohol problem, and a plane crash it seems so unfitting for his life to end on the floor of a Manhattan apartment. It will be sometime before we know the whole story. We may never fully understand how or why this happened.

Here is my personal collection of DJ AM mixes that I have obtained over the years. My favorite is the Power 106 mix. The first time I heard this mix I was delivering pizzas for a living, and DJing for fun on the side. This mix single handedly inspired me to take my passion to the next level. Something clicked in my head, and I decided to pursue my dream, and throw caution to the wind. I quit my job weeks later and have been a full time professional DJ since. His creativity was unheard of at the time this mix came out, NO ONE was mixing music together the way he did. Thanks for the apology! Sadly, your career is still over.

In a video posted Monday (July 20) on BeastieBoys.com, Adam “MCA” Yauch announced that he has cancer and the group is canceling all upcoming shows (and pushing back the release of their Hot Sauce Committee, Part One album) while he receives treatment for it.

“The reason we’re here talking is because I have some pretty heavy news to say,” Yauch said in the video. “About two months ago, I started feeling this little lump in my throat, like what you would feel if you have swollen glands or something like that… and so I didn’t really think it was anything. But then recently, when we were over in Europe doing promotion, I started to think that I should talk to my doctor, so I … saw him when I got back, and he sent me to a specialist. They did tests, and I actually have a form of cancer in the gland that’s over here, in the parotid gland, and it’s also in the lymph node right in that area.”

The parotid is the largest of the salivary glands. It is wrapped about the mandible bone and aides in chewing and swallowing by secreting saliva.

Flanked by bandmate Ad-Rock, Yauch said that he’s going to have surgery and begin radiation with the next week, and while the news sounds dire, doctors are optimistic that he should make a full recovery.

“The good news is, they did scans of my whole body and it’s only localized in this one area, and it’s not in a place that affects my voice, so … that’s nice. That’s convenient,” he laughed. “So it’s a little bit of a setback — it’s a pain in the ass — but this is something that’s very treatable, and in most cases … they’re able to completely get rid of it, and people don’t have continuing problems with it, and they’ve caught it early and it’s not anywhere else in my body. So, that’s the good news.”

Yauch concluded the video message by apologizing to all Beastie Boys fans for having to cancel the groups’ upcoming shows — including headlining slots at the All Points West festival on July 31 and Lollapalooza on August 8 — and joking that his illness will give Ad-Rock time to work on his Kenny Rogers-themed country band.

“This will be a great opportunity,” he laughed. “You’ll have some time now. This is going to be big.”

EMI, the Beastie Boys’ label, released a statement confirming the news. “Our thoughts, love and prayers are with Adam Yauch, his family and the Beastie Boys,” the statement said. “The most important thing is to allow Adam to focus on staying healthy. We wish him all the best and a speedy recovery.”

I don’t know whats more brutal, the fact that MCA has a form of cancer, or how incredibly old him and Ad-Rock look.

So I’m sure by now your girlfriend has probably made you listen to or you have heard a track on the radio called “Best I Ever Had” by a guy coming out of Toronto named Drake.

Drake is pretty much the hottest up-and-coming rapper in 2009 and has already secured himself a verse on Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 album due out 9/11. Not bad for a guy who hasn’t even put out an official album yet, eh?

I heard about this mixtape months and months ago and I’ll admit it, I slept on it. I had never heard of him, but I did know that he was running with Lil’ Wayne and that was a factor why I didn’t want to listen to him because Wayne was still on his singing bullshit.

This mixtape got critical reviews on pretty much every blog/website I read about it on. I finally downloaded it yesterday and I must say this guy is definetly on some other shit. He has tracks similar to “Best I Ever Had” but also has tracks where he holds his own against hip-hop heavyweights like Bun B.

I highly suggest people download this mixtape. There is no DJ on it so you don’t have to worry about all that stupid shit.

This mixtape is what his second album should have been. He finally ditches all the edited lyrics and kiddie songs for some real shit. He has obviously taken all the criticism on his lyrics and stepped his game up seeing by the track “POW” where he has a Bone Thugs type flow and actually kills the game.

So everybody is talking about it, everybody is bootlegging it, and everybody seems to have a different opinion on Marshall Mathers latest LP, Relapse, and it doesn’t even hit stores till this Tuesday.

My thoughts on the album? I think my graphic above says it all, FAIL. What a flop, and this is coming from the guy who actually LIKED Encore so don’t think I am just Em biased or just hating cause everybody else is liking it (which I’ve actually heard more negative reviews from people than I have positive anyway).

The problem? Well, pick one.

1. Eminem is 37 years old.

Now, with that being said, I am not saying he is too old to be rapping because Jay-Z is damn near 40 and still puts out decent material (see: American Gangster). What I am saying is that Eminem, at 37, should be rapping about NEW things. You’ve been out of the game for what, 4-5 years? You couldn’t think of ANYTHING else to rhyme about besides the same, tired, not-shocking-anymore-cause-it’s-not-1999 bullshit? WE KNOW DUDE, WE GET IT. Your Mom is a crazy bitch, you eat & sleep pills, and you like either getting raped, or doing the raping. Trust me Marshall, we all know, and we all closed our wide open shocked mouths years ago.

Now I know in defense people might come at me and say “dLux, it’s not like the rappers you listen to are actually switching their style up and talking about more things than flipping birds, cars, and smoking weed”

And to that I say touche my friend. BUT, those rappers (Gucci Mane, Shawty Lo, Yung LA, etc) haven’t put out albums that will go down as classics, sold 35 million records, or made more money in rap than most people in the game in a 5 year span. There is no shame in throwing in the towel while you are ahead. Instead, Eminem chose to put out the garbage that is Relapse.

2. Why are you rapping like a cartoon character?

Did I miss something on this album? Is it suppose to be a concept album of a bunch of characters? Or has Slim Shady turned into an arab-rapper and I just missed the bus? “We Made You”? Wigger, please.

 3. Since when has Eminem had to release 3 singles BEFORE his album came out to garner some type of hype? (Go ahead, I’ll give you a second to think about it)

 It all started with that piece of shit that still stinks from here, “Crack a Bottle”. Could you be anymore cliche after a 4 year hiatus? Since when does Eminem take the Cash Money Records circa 1999 route and make a song about popping bottles in the club? Then have 50 Cent jump on the mic and use it as a toilet after Eminem wasn’t even done whiping his own ass? Bad move no. 1 Jimmy Iovine.

OK, so “Crack a Bottle” isn’t gaining much attention, what now? Well, let’s check the toilet out and see if there are any fresh turds left….

“We Made You”

So I gave “Crack a Bottle” a pardon because there were rumors that it might end up as 50’s first single for his upcoming album (it ended up on Relapse in the end) so I figured it was just a bad Eminem chorus/verse.

Enter “We Made You” aka “The Real Slim Shady” aka “Just Lose It” aka the comedic top 40 single. This song is the reason for me saying what’s the deal with the cartoon character voice? Is this dude serious? Is mainstream America serious for actually making this song somewhat of a hit (#1 on iTunes the day after its release)? Absolute garbage and probably holds the title for the worst song on the album right next to “Crack a Bottle”. And the video? MORE SHOCK VALUE!! LOOK AT EMINEM, HE’S CRAZY!!! HE’S DRESSING UP LIKE CELEBRITIES AND BASHING THEM!! CRAZY!!!!!

Obviously “We Made You” wasn’t gaining THAT much steam because Interscope decided to drop ANOTHER single and ANOTHER video (we’re on #3 now, PRE-release). What can we do to make this video different? Hm, let’s take 5.

I got it! We’ll make it like a horror film! And debut the video on Cinemax!! YES.

Enter “3am” (also the name of a Young Jeezy song, produced by Timbaland, which is WAY better, look it up, it’s actually on my first mixtape so you don’t have to look far).

My question on this song is hooowwww muuuchhhh tiiimmmeee stttrreeccttthhiiinggg cccaaannn yyoouuu ddoooo? It is just me or does it sound like he is purposely rapping slower than it should be so he can stay on beat? FAIL.

Now don’t get me wrong here, the album has A COUPLE good songs but it definetly has much more bad than good. I like “Stay Wide Awake” and “Trouble” but that’s honestly about it.

So in conclusion, this album is absolute garbage and I can only imagine that Relapse 2, which is scheduled to come out at the end of this year, will be just as bad if not worse.

If you want some REAL HIP-HOP from some real MCs who’ve been in the game 15+ years and are still putting out quality, then this is the only album you should buy on May 19th:
