Top 5 Songs That Need To Go Away In 2012

Posted by dLux On January - 19 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

As we start this new year, I think it is important as a DJ to be out with the old and in with the new. A couple years ago I posted a blog about songs that needed to go away starting the new year, and it actually got reposted on the Orlando Weekly Blog.

With another new year approaching, I decided to do it again. So here we go, the Top 5 songs that I feel all DJs should cut out of their playlists.

5. LMFAO “Party Rock Anthem”

4. Katy Perry “Firework”

3. ALL songs by or featuring Flo Rida

2. Waka Flocka Flame “No Hands”

And the #1 song that not only needs to not be played anymore in 2012, let alone anymore period is….

1. Benny Benassi Feat. Gary Go “Cinema” (Skrillex Remix)

Now I’m sure some of you Top 40 DJs, if not most of you, are going to deny that these aren’t in your playlist anymore and to that I say bullshit. I know you want everyone to hear the latest Porter Robinson remix or your Moombahton transition, but most of the time people just don’t know what it is and you have to dig in your Sell Out bag and play one of the songs above to get your dancefloor back (sadly).

What songs do you feel should be nixed starting 2012? Comment and let us know!

Avicii – Levels (Skrillex Remix): Is It Real?

Posted by dLux On December - 9 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Well the remix that everyone has been waiting for since the live footage of him playing it came out has finally arrived.

Or has it? After careful dissection by myself and @swaglipple, this version is either heavily changed by the former From First To Last frontman since the live videos have come out, or this is just a fake put out by someone with very similar presets.

If you watch the video in the top right corner (or the one below) you will notice subtle differences in the version that has leaked today and the version that is played live. For one, the build-up at the beginning in the video has the signature Skrillex high-pitch vocals, where as the version that leaked, just has the sample from the original Levels. Second, the sample used before the big drop is completely different in the leaked version that in the one in the videos. Third, in the leaked version it has a drop-out with the “Get a Good Feeling” build-up and the videos do not.

Now could this just be a very early version that leaked today that had yet to get all the bells and whistles that the video has? Possibly. Could Skrillex have changed his mind on a lot of the things that we are saying is missing? He could have but I really find it highly unlikely, especially because the two videos take place in two different venues and the tracks plays out almost identically. Is this just an extremely elaborate impostor? It very well could be.

I’m not believing anything until I hear it on this…

Download Levels (“Skrillex” Remix) here and be the judge.

A-Trak (finally) coming to Orlando

Posted by dLux On November - 1 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Orlando, it has finally happened. It’s not Steve Aoki, it’s definitely not Hyper Crush. No, THE heir to DJ AMs throne is coming to Orlando, DJ A-Trak.

To say that I am excited about this is a complete understatement. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that this guy is going to come here and seriously put on a clinic. Just a few months after older brother Dave-1 of Chromeo brought his Fancy Footwork to The Beacham, little brother is coming to shut it down and show all you ableton DJs what it’s all about. From his Fools Gold Radio series, to the perfect-in-every-way Dirty South Dance mixtapes, this is one bad ass Jew on the decks. Did I mention he was a DMC champion at age 16?

(He’s not 16 here but still just insane)

November 29th, skip your usual Tuesday night party and come watch and listen to the best DJ in the world.

“You’re now listening to araabMUZIK”

Posted by dLux On August - 31 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

araabMUZIK, the producer behind the Cam’ron banger “Get It In Ohio” and most of his Crime Pays album, released an electro-ish mix about 2 months ago entitled Electronic Dream and it is fucking fire. It is the perfect blend of hard hip hop beats meets classy electro synths with a touch of female vocals in there. The kid is an absolute monster on an MPC and is actually on tour right now performing tracks live. Here is a little number he did in Paris, France that is just insane.

Electronic Dream is out now, I suggest you get it and play it from front to back.

…fulla fried fishes!”

My boy @Sahina407 posted this and I had to repost cause you know I have an infatuation with my girl @KREAYSHAWN. It’s a parody of her oh-so-slept-on banger “Gucci Gucci” entitled “Fishy Fishy” by @KREAYFISH. Shit is literally shot almost frame-for-frame from the original video and is hilarious.

No Breasts, No Requests

Posted by dLux On August - 20 - 2011 1 COMMENT

This little gem of a note was left in the DJ booth at Mr. Sisters by one of the tech guys, Troy. It is so incredible that I had to take a picture of it and post it to the book of faces.

Much to my chagrin, my boy @swaglipple let me know a couple days later that there is an entire site dedicated to notes either left in the DJ booth or given to the DJ for requests. I’m not much of a tumblr guy, I still don’t really know what to make of it, but this one is just too good not to follow.

No Breasts, No Requests is the site I am talking about and if you have ever worked in a club, especially as a DJ or Tech guy, you HAVE to check this site out. It actually features pictures from another Orlando spot, Cleos, and the picture they use is just dead-on as far as what not to ask a DJ. You can also submit photos to the site for which I will be doing for the photo above. Here are a few more examples of awesomeness just incase you are still skeptical.

That last one is seriously so fucking great.

“Last party we had, they shut down Privé…

Posted by dLux On August - 17 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

…Ain’t that where the Heat play? Niggas hate ballas these days / Ain’t that like Lebron James? Ain’t that just like D. Wade?”

In case you have been living under a rock for the past week, Kanye West & Jay-Z released their highly anticipated joint-album, Watch The Throne, last Tuesday. This was one of the first hip-hop albums in a loooong time to not suffer a leak and thats because these Titans of the industry decided to release it digitally and not physically (at least at first), therefore never letting it get in the hands of any third-party to where it could spring a leak. Clever girl.

After having a week to listen and take the album in, it is safe to say that this is a very strong release. You can really tell the difference between artists that are in the same studio doing tracks together as opposed to just emailing verses back-and-forth *cough* DJ Khaled *cough*. Not a single part of this album was done without both Kanye and Jay together.

Stand-out absolute bangers include: Niggas In Paris, Gotta Have It, Who Gon’ Stop Me. The first one and the last one I mentioned feature that train that everyone and I mean EVERYONE is jumping on, so much that the shit could be close to derailing: dubstep. Who Gon’ Stop Me actually samples one of the heavyweights of the genre, Flux Pavilion. Leave it to Kanye & Jay to use dubstep in a should I say, classy way. Not too much, but just enough to where its not monotonous.

With production from RZA, The Neptunes, Kanye West himself, his latest protegé Hit-Boy, NO ID, Swizz Beatz, Lex Luger & Pete Rock, the beats do not disappoint. Obviously very sample heavy but still a very fresh sound to an extremely stale rap scene.

So should you buy it, download it, steal it? Do whatever you feel is right but one things for sure: listen to it front to back.

“So I ball so hard muhfuckas wanna fine me / But first niggas gotta find me / What’s 50 grand to a muhfucka like me / Can you please remind me? / This shit crazy / Ya’ll don’t know that don’t shit phase me / The Nets could go 0-82 and I look at you like this sh*t gravy”

That shit crae.

20 Questions w/ DJ A-Rock

Posted by dLux On August - 4 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Back like cooked crack (aye!), it’s 20 Questions. This week we are talking to the DJ that has the best shoe selection in Orlando, DJ A-Rock.

A-Rock, like our last participant, DJ Rincon, is not only DJing in Downtown Orlando, but he has taken his show on the road with traveling shows, that being the Dew Tour.

Whether its the beginning of the month at Vain, scaring people at Blue Martini on Mondays with Dubstep (or opening for Lil’ Jon, no big deal), playing a more chill vibe at Ember on Tuesdays, or his creme de la creme gig at Rok Room on the weekends, to say that he keeps himself busy is an understatement. A-Rock is also one of the DJs in Orlando keeping scratch techniques/routines in his set and for that, like Tosh, we thank you.

1. Weapons of choice? (Equipment, mixer, software)
Technic 1200′s, Rane TTM-57, Pioneer 800, Serato.

2. Favorite genre to spin?
All of them! No but seriously, I like all types of music. I try and keep it as diverse as possible. Keeps it fun.

3. Favorite producer?
Toss up between Tensnake and Louis La Roche.

4. What are you listening to in your car?
Carte Blanche – White Man On The Moon

5. Banger of Summer 2011?
Let’s face it, Give Me Everything – Pitbull ft. Ne-Yo, Nayer & Afrojack is a huge. (Agreed.) Dr. Gonzo Anthem – Crookers is ridiculous.

6. Most slept on song of 2011?
Man, music comes out lightning quick. And there’s nothing wrong with that, but some songs don’t even get a chance. So I’d say two songs that if people don’t know about, should check… ION – D.I.M. and TAI and Eargasm – Black Raw.

7. Who influenced you early in your career?
I got started because I saw an Incubus show back when I was 16, and watching Kid Kilmore manipulate samples into the live band sets was amazing to me. A.M. 100%. Z-Trip. X-Ecutioners. A-Trak. KLEVER. Enferno. Magic Mike. DJ NOVA.

8. Song you hate getting requests for?
“Do you have that birthday song?” “Can you play something I can dance to?”

9. Where was your first weekly?
Red Coconut Club @ Citywalk.

10. Where can we find you now?
In my studio answering these questions. Haha. Ember on Tuesdays & Fridays, 1st Thursdays @ VAiN, Blue Martini Mondays, & Rok Room. Nothing against my residencies, but Rok Room Sundays is by far my favorite party. I get to play WHATEVER I want. It’s a great vibe, and the energy is always on point. I’m also out on the 2011 Dew Tour this summer. I’m also starting to play outside of Orlando a lot more so it’s been nice.

Switch!

You are an avid sneaker freak, so lets find out what kicks make the man…

11. Favorite pair if you had to choose?

MAN, I can only pick one??? Well I can’t so I’ll provide a pic of my top 5…

Dunk Haze: These mean A LOT to me. Last picture most people saw of A.M. he was throwing out the first pitch at a Mets game in New York. I came across these at the Dunk XChange earlier this year, and got a great deal on them.
Jordan III Black Cement: Quite possibly the greatest sneaker of all time
Bottom Row:
Nike Air Trainer III from DJ AM’s Collection
Nike Air Yeezy
Nike Dunk Goldenrod : I have 3 pairs. Such a great, clean, colorway.

12. Go-to pair that you’re rocking right now?
Nike Dunk Low Splatter.

13. Upcoming release you are looking forward to?
SB has been on point with some of their releases this year, from the Liberties to the Space Jams. Jordan has killed it with the Retro III releases and I’ve been lucky enough to cop em all, so I’m looking forward to the Black Cements releasing later this year.

14. Most paid for a single pair and which ones?
I had to cop my Black Cement III’s off EBAY, so I paid a lil bit for em. Luckily I received the Yeezy’s as a gift or else that would have cost some mint.

15. High tops or Low Tops?
Depends on the day, weather, fit, etc.

You can get with this, or you can get with that….

16. iPhone or Android?
iPhone allllll dayyyy. Instagram YUH!

17. Regular or V-Neck?
V-Neck, but I collect Vintage T’s so I have A LOT OF LOVE for the crew neck. LOL

18. Skinny Jeans or Baggy?
Baggy jeans just don’t look right.

19. Fitted or Snapback?
Snapbacks are in right now, but a fitted cap is timeless.

20. Any final words?
Thank You to Last Nights Hype for including me in “20 Questions”. I appreciate it 100%. If anyone wants, stay up with me on twitter @DJ_AROCK or Like http://www.facebook.com/DJAROCK1

No, thank YOU DJ A-Rock for being another great addition to 20 Questions, our weekly feature on DJs, photographers, and anyone else is Orlando making their own lane for themselves. Be sure to check out all our past entries in 20 Questions with Kid Judah, DJ Y-Not?, and DJ Rincon.

Join us next week as we feature the long-hair-don’t-care, DJ Trendkiller.

20 Questions w/ DJ Rincon

Posted by dLux On July - 26 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Yes, we’re I’m back! And this ain’t no photo album, its our continuing column of who doesn’t suck in Orlando, 20 Questions!

This week we feature the 2010 Redbull ThreeStyle Champion, DJ Rincon. I actually met him for the first time at that very competition and he was the first DJ to drop a Biggie song and really get the crowd hyped (the competition was on March 9th, the anniversary of the Notorious ones death). Rincon went on to win the competition and move on in the contest and take a trip to Miami where he would later be judged by DJ Jazzy Jeff among other big names.

Rincons versatility is very apparent in the wide array of places he holds weeklys. From 23, to Tavern On The Lake, and the newly (re)opened Zen Ultra Lounge, he is everywhere.

1. Weapons of choice?
Rane TT57, Technic 1200s, and Vinyl.

2. Favorite genre to spin?
It depends on my mood and which personality I am when I wake up. But in general I can enjoy each genre I spin equally depending on the crowd.

3. Favorite producer?
I have a few, lately I have been feeling Axwell and Bartbmore. In hip-hop I have too many to name.

4. What are you listening to in your car?
I’m one of the few that listens to talk radio, I usually tune into radio stations when they have mixshows.

5. Banger of Summer 2011?
Alexandra Stan – Mr Saxobeat

6. Most slept on song of 2011?
Lupe Fiasco – Word I Never Said

7. Who influenced you early in your career?
My Friend Albert who was a 50 year old disco DJ, who coached me on how to blend when I was in my early 20s.

8. Song you hate getting requests for?
I really hate getting requests for Bon Jovi and Journey, But if its at a mobile gig then I really don’t care.

9. Where was your first weekly?
It was at AKA lounge for a b-boy night, It was good times. If you can DJ for breakdancers, more than likely you can handle any crowd.

10. Where can we find you now?
Wed, you can find me at club 23 on Church street, On Thursdays you can find me at the new Club Zen, On Fridays you can find me at Dragon Room, On Saturdays you can find me at Tavern On The Lake.

Switching gears…

11. You won the RedBull Threestyle DJ battle last year here in Orlando, tell me what it was like hearing your name as the winner?
I was in shock really, I remember scracthing my head when the said my name. It was one of those things I won’t forget, like the closest I ever felt to being in a movie. Other than that the only other thing I have won is the claw machine game at wallmart, I don’t really think about that night that much because I don’t want to be one of those dudes that live in the past lol

12. What would be your dream opening slot for someone or which artist would you love to act as their DJ?
I don’t really dream of opening slots, I just dream about being a headliner and having people that doubted me be my openers.

13. East Coast or West Coast 90′s hip hop? Why?
I like West Coast more, Even though I’ve only been there once, I just get a better vibe from them, they don’t tolerate any B.S., I can respect that.

14. What do you think of the Dubstep movement that is taking over Orlando? Dubstep?
There is a movement here? I think that only popular with the college crowd, because I still haven’t had anyone request any. I think its just hype, Orlando is known for jumping on bandwagons and then falling off when it hits a bump. I can respect the DJs that spin that music with good fundamentals of turntablism, they will make it when the hype is over. The other ones will end up like reggaeton DJs, playing house or like unemployed Breakbeat DJs from the 90s.

This or that…

15. Android or iPhone?
Android, because putting files and music is way more simpler than dealing with the cluster fuck mess of syncing Itunes

16. Snapback or fitted hat?
Fitted.

17. High top or Low tops?
If I’m wearing shorts, I will only wear low tops. If Im wearing pants, it doesnt matter cause I don’t rock skinny jeans… Swag.. lol.

18. Xbox or PS3?
PS3 looks better, I plan on buying one soon eventually when I have time to play video games. It will probably save me money in the long run.

19. Millennia Mall or Florida Mall?
Florida Mall if you want to see Brazilian girls with big asses. I go to Millennia Mall if I want to feel like a baller.

20. Any final words??
If anyone is reading this hit me up on these following sites, and I want to give a shot out to every DJ, if any of you want to work or build something together hit me up. I can’t really think of anything else to say I’m not much of a motivational speaker lol. (PS don’t spam me.)

We’re Comin’ Out!

Posted by dLux On July - 16 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

We want the world to know! You’ve seen the video (top right corner), you’ve seen the flyer, you’ve seen the banner above, and thats right, we are going gay (bro). Hey, Smile For Camera is doing it, so why not?

But we’re not just going anywhere, we’re going straight for the top. We’re going to the #1 Gay Club in Orlando as voted by Orlando Weekly readers just under 2 weeks ago. We’re going to that big pink building across from Hot Dog Heaven. We’re going to that building you pass by on your way to or from Dancers Royale. We’re going…to Mr. Sisters.

Join me as I, DJ dLux, play those genres you see everywhere, except better: Electro, House, little Moombahton, lots of 128 BPM dubstep sounds, and a little bit of 140 BPM dubstep sounds to top it off. Come to a club where they actually CARE about the music and DANCE their asses off. It’s not the drink specials that are packing this massive venue out…its the music, the lights, the spectacle. The epitome of a SHOW.

So that’s the music, now lets talk about lights. Tabor Visuals and I will mind fuck you all night with a light show so perfectly choreographed it will give you chills.

Gay Club or not, this place is easily one of the nicest clubs in Orlando. 6,000 square foot deck looking out onto Lake Barton, completely covered so in either rain or shine you can have one of the nicest views in the city. This is of course as you’re slamming some of the stiffest drinks in town as well. My (former) roommate Dr. Waters said that he will never drink 3 LITs from there probably for the rest of his life because they were so lethal, and this man is no lightweight.

Don’t be afraid, its only for one night. I bet your girlfriend will love it. So bring her, and tell her to bring her friends (no matter how much you hate them) and you will for sure be getting laid at the end of the night by her.

With our recent name change we are expanding our brand to all sorts of different markets and we are proud to host a party in one of Orlandos premier LGBT venues and hope to continue the already long lasting relationship we have with the venue, and the community.

So long story short: fucking be there. Its going to be awesome. Who knows, I might even play the “Nice Dick” video.
