As the news broke today about Michael Jackson’s death many websites reporting the news were effected by the massive amount of hits they were receiving. The news topped updates on Twitter and caused huge spikes of visits to Facebook and other Web sites. My own twitter, and facebook homepages were a sea of Jackson comments, as I posted earlier. At one point I had two full pages of status updates related to Michael Jackson. Facebook’s people said that user “status updates” on typically a quick, short comment to a user’s personal network of friends and acquaintances, were running at three times the usual pace in the hour after the news broke. Such updates “are still well above our usual numbers,” after 5 p.m.

On the “google trends” website (http://www.google.com/trends), Michael Jackson related searches including “michael jackson died”, “michael jackson dead 2009″, “michael jackson heart attack”, and others were six of the top ten search requests. Two other noteworthy searches were “harrsion ford dead” and “jeff goldblum dead”, both rumors started through twitter status updates.

Micheal Jackson’s death broke Google for a time today. So many people around the world were typing the words “Michael Jackson” into the search engine simultaneously that Google News’ computer filters assumed someone was spamming the system. Instead of news about the King of Pop’s death, many frustrated users got an error message. “We’re sorry … but your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application,” the error message read. Google officials said the problem was fixed within 35 minutes.

According to TMZ.com, who broke the news of his death first, The internet hasn’t seen this kind of traffic “since Obama’s inauguration”. Throughout my own internet surfing today I have been unable to connect to, LATimes.com, TMZ.com, Twitter.com, PerezHilton.com, and most interestingly Theo2.co.uk. Theo2.co.uk is the website for O2, the arena in London where Jackson was scheduled to perform 50 sold out shows at starting next month.

And of course, our own orangecountyconcepts.com… I blogged about this story minutes after the first TMZ report making our site one of the first blogs to feature the story. According to TMZ.com, who broke the news of his death first, The internet hasn’t seen this kind of traffic since Obama’s inauguration.

Is there any other celebrity in the world who’s death could make such a huge cultural impact? Obviously it would be tasteless to mention who else could bring the web to a hault, but I believe that there are very few others, and would put Michael Jackson in the top 3 of this list. Every news station has abandoned regular programing and is now reporting in non-stop blocks about the King of Pop’s death. As I personally reflect, from the view of a DJ, and someone who has been in the music industry for years now, its hard to imagine DJing one night, at a club, bar, or even a wedding or bar mitzvah without Michael Jackson…. His music was timeless and bridged the generational gap. 750 million albums sold, that will NEVER happen again.

The LA Times is now reporting that Michael Jackson has died. CNN is reporting that CBS has reported his death as well. CNN still has not officially confirmed his death. Most every TV network has now said he has died, but that the reports are unconfirmed. This story is now on the front page of nearly every news organization website in the world. Wolf Blitzer reporting live on CNN is repeating that he has died, as live aerial shots from UCLA Medical Center show thousands of people arriving to the hospital to pay tribute.

A spokesman for the family, Brian Oxman just made a reference to “prescription drug abuse” as the cause of the situation, he continued on to say “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.”. He made this statement less than 10 minutes ago on CNN. Oxman can be seen in the picture below to the left of Jackson.

oxman.jpg

The social networking websites are flooded with people reacting to the news, famous and not so famous. Here are a few noteworthy tweets that have been coming in:

twittermj.jpg

The social networking sites like twitter and facebook, as well as sites like TMZ.com and Perez Hilton’s hugely popular blog have come to a slow pase. Hundreds of thousands of tweets and facebook status updates about Jackson have been pouring in over a very short time. TMZ.com reported the news first, and soon after was overloaded, and unaccessible. Second, the LA Times reported the news, and then that site went down. We took screen shots immediately when the story broke, which you can see below:

This is definitely one of those “Where were you at when…” moments that only happens a few times in a lifetime.

TMZ reports Michael Jackson has died.

TMZ.com has reported that Michael Jackson has died. They have not sited any sources, and this may be an example of irresponsible reporting as no official news has been issued. TMZ.com is overloaded with web traffic and is now loading sparatically. According to another source local LA TV stations are reporting he has died also… CNN’s Wolf Blitzer is reporting that Michael Jackson is in a coma (as of 6:25pm EST).

BREAKING NEWS!!

Pop star Michael Jackson was rushed to a hospital this afternoon by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics. Paramedics responded to a call at Jackson’s home around 12:26 p.m. He was not breathing when they arrived. The parademics performed CPR and took him to UCLA Medical Center.

HOLY SHIT!!

Vince Carter is heading home, to central Florida — and he’s bringing Ryan Anderson with him.

The Nets have agreed in principle to trade their most dynamic player and top gate attraction to the Orlando Magic in exchange for three players, which will effectively help them clear roughly $18 million off their 2010-11 salary cap.

Coming to New Jersey are point guard Rafer Alston, power forward Tony Battie, and rookie shooting guard Courtney Lee.

Sarcasm, a Public Service Announcement.

Posted by Meagan On June - 19 - 2009 1 COMMENT

So it seems that some of you have yet to become acquainted with the “bastard step child of irony”. From reactions across Facebook, Twitter and dare I say it, even the blogs of OrangeCountyConcepts.com it has become very apparent that some of you JUST DON’T GET IT. After coming to this conclusion I said to myself, “Meagan, you have yet to do your good deed of the day. And this deed has the potential to help more than just one poor soul, it can help many!” So here it is, kiddies:

The technical definition from Miriam-Webster Dictionary:

  1. a sharp and often satirical or ironic utterance designed to cut or give pain
  2. a mode of satirical wit depending for its effect on bitter, caustic, and often ironic language that is usually directed against an individual
  3. the use or language of sarcasm

Made easier to understand by Urban Dictionary: (Just in case you had to look up any of the words in the previous definition.)

  1. Your body’s natural defense against stupid.
  2. Noun. A very British form of humor which derives laughs from saying something while really meaning something else. Often (though not always, contrary to popular belief) used in scathing remarks. The word ‘Sarcasm’ is derived from a Greek word meaning ‘tearing flesh’.
  3. Gift for intelligent, ability to compose messages which questions another’s intellect.
  4. To say the opposite of what is obvious.
  5. With the use of it any word can be turned into a fuck you statement with undertones of absolute contempt.
  6. The only language I speak.

I can only hope that this will aide the unfortunate individuals who have been left behind when entering a conversation filled with sarcastic remarks, those who attempt to retort the users of sarcasm with nonsensical bullshit and also those who choose to comment on Facebook, Twitter and the blogs of OrangeCountyC0ncepts.com.

Keep it classy, kids.

Day 2

Posted by dLux On June - 16 - 2009 17 COMMENTS

Well, well, well…My blog seems to have started quite the stir around the Orlando/UCF area. Producing almost 100 comments through FaceBook and OCC combined and people still just can’t stop talking about it or giving their criticism on it.

Since its day 2 and I have had a day to talk with everybody about it, this is where I’ll take the opportunity to add some things in the blog from yesterday that I guess I should have put in there to make it more clear to people.

Let’s start with this guy from a promotion PRODUCTION company in town, since we apparently “deleted his comment cause somebody didn’t like it”. Here ya go buddy, front and center:

“I posted a long ass comment on your blog but I guess somebody didn’t like it because I don’t see it there.

Summary.
1. You are burning bridges with every promoter/dj/club owner if they have read this because of your attitude. Go to school and learn that is not the way to get gigs.
2. NEWS: Hip Hop is NOT different if that’s what you are going for.
3. Electro is NOT different either.
4. Facebook is a networking tool, don’t like it? delete people who piss you off with their promotions, or sign OFF!
5. Blogs won’t stop idiot promoters.
6. Hip hop has been DONE. Electro has been DONE. Top 40/mash ups has been DONE. What are you going to bring new to the table??
7. Instead of blogging and complaining about same old shit like every dj/promoter, do something different and let your music do the talking.
8. What were you really trying to prove with your blog because what you said was pretty commen sense to most, at least in my mind.
Peace
Eyecue”

Here’s my rebuttal in the order you listed:

1. Burning bridges, eh? With who? I didn’t mention any club names, and the ones I did mention I said they were thriving. I’m not saying anything but the truth here and obviously am saying what everybody in this town has been thinking cause there is much more positive response to this blog than negative.

2. Did I say a hip-hop party would be different? And let’s not forget the only partys that have lasted 10 years+ in this town ARE hip-hop partys (Phat Friday and Super Sundays).

3. I guess I didn’t lay the sarcasm on thick enough for you, did I? You really think I am suggesting this town needs ANOTHER electro party? Or that I was suggesting MORE Top 40/Mashup/Electro nights?

4. I never talked down on anyone who uses FaceBook as a networking tool. It is a great way to get your events out there and we utilize it to the fullest extent. I did talk down on kids who feel that its necessary to post more than one event invite for the same night and then remind people of it on their status as soon as they don’t see it on their home screen anymore, every hour, everyday, until the event.

5. No shit, it will hopefully open their eyes and let them know that people are fucking annoyed as shit.

6. See 2-3

7. My music DOES do the talking. I post remixes and mixtapes all the time and get rave reviews, been featured on the front page, top spot of the biggest mixtape torrent site on the internet, multiple times. If my music didn’t do the talking I would still be DJing with some bar owner trying to tell me what I have to play and conforming to that but instead I take pride in what I do and would rather have no nights at all and keep my originality than confrom to sound like every other asshole on Alafaya (except for a select few of course, you guys included).

8. Well obviously other people appreciated what I had to say because we are getting commended for finally speaking out about what everyone has been thinking for so long.

There you go sir, your comment was posted.

Let’s move on to another one, shall we? Oh look, its from another person from your promotion PRODUCTION company:

haha, no, more like “Two Tab Trip.” dude if you really think we’re a bunch of yuppies you’ve got it twisted; save those comments for the Vintage/Vixen crowd. I dislike the preppies just as much as you do, but I don’t need to spin gangsta music to prove that. now, the problem with your blog is that it screams about a problem with the nightlife, yet instead of planting a solution, you tell us to hold our breath and wait for you and Dawe to save us from the same non-sense and mainstream music you guys spin. if you want to shout at our culture and ignore Jeff’s claim that “your followers don’t cross paths,” go ahead. but people like us don’t relate; we don’t show up to your parties with do-rags to do the crip-walk, and we don’t listen to white kids with “trill nigga” mixtapes. It’s not that I want to hate on your shit, that’s just the way it is. If u wanna talk shit about the underground techno crowd, don’t be surprised when they retort w/ the contempt they have for your gangsta bullshit.”

So I spin rap music because I hate preppy people? LOLZ. It couldn’t be because I’ve been listening to it since I was younger or anything right? You obviously never made it to one of my sets at Pounders/Octagon/Knight Klub with Dawe, Junior Diaz and I when I would have all the preppy people going crazy over some hip-hop. Dawe and I didn’t say for anyone to hold their breath nor did we say that we were going to be the saviors of Orlando nightlife. I said we HOPE to bring something to the table that will change what is going on now.

You’ve obviously never met me by you saying do-rags and crip walking. I wrote that blog that has your panties in a twist buddy, and did I use any slang? Wuz I typin like dis cuh? No. So don’t be so quick to judge buddy. Just because I spin Dirty South shit doesn’t make me some ignorant white trash fuck who wears SouthPole and jean shorts with J’s, just like you guys spinning at Dungeon doesn’t make you guys “yuppies”, right?

You might not listen to “trill niggaz” mixtapes and you clearly don’t because that mixtape was put out after Pimp C died, and that was the name of one of his songs, but I wouldn’t expect you to know that and I honestly wouldn’t fault you for it because like you said, it’s not your cup of tea. Meanwhile, 20,000+ people DO listen to that kind of mixtape and love what I did on it.

Last but not least let me make this perfectly clear: I DO NOT HATE ELECTRO/TECHNO/MINIMAL/WHATEVER YOU GUYS WANNA CALL IT THESE DAYS.

I was at Crush LAST NIGHT, and I have been there multiple times before that. I also have frequented JESUS a few times as well to catch the major acts they bring in. I HAVE AN ELECTRO MIXTAPE. Docta Dawe and Junior Diaz got me into the genre when we use to DJ together and it rubbed off on my hip-hop ass like a motherfucker. I don’t know where that got mixed up but I just wanted to make that clear.

Docta Dawe and I would just like to thank everybody who has commented on this blog, debated with us, and pretty much kept the website in everybodys browser over the past 2 days. I will no longer partake in anymore going back and forth with promoters who feel like I’m an asshole on FaceBook or here, cause I frankly don’t give a shit.

The blog yesterday was written for one reason and one reason only and whether you like it or you don’t you helped achieve our one goal: to get people talking.

The end of an era.

Posted by dLux On June - 15 - 2009 47 COMMENTS

As many of you have probably figured out by now if you have been on Church Street for the past couple of Thursdays, that Stereo has shut it doors. Relax, this is only for summer and because we are willing to accept when the town is dead, unlike every other promotion company in town who are still pushing/shoving their parties down your throat. Which brings me to my next subject that Dawe and I have been dying to blog about because it so desperately needs to be done and who better to do it then the only promotion company in town to put people on blast publicly?

IT’S. FUCKING. OVER.

Remember back in 2006-2007? Or maybe even 2007-2008? The glory days when people actually stormed the photographer to get their picture taken at whatever night they were at so they could make it their default in the morning? When college bars would have lines down and around the building just to get in and drink warm, flat beer? Yes we were all a part of them (at least some of us depending on how old you are) and we are all most likely guilty of having at least ONE default picture with a Greezer, Knightlyfe, WhatsHot, OCC, etc. If you didn’t have one of those companies in your default then you were probably at the original Saturday/Thursday or Crush getting your picture taken by, in my opinion, the best photographers/editors in town, Kcoll or the oh so hot Kapoow.

Promotion wasn’t even that hard back then, post a couple MySpace bulletins here and there and you were good to go. The best promotion that was going on was seeing all your friends with pics at some bar that made you want to go to that bar and get your picture taken yourself.

Well here we are in 2009 and my how things have changed. Greezer and Knightlyfe have basically fallen off the map, WhatsHot has one night a week (at least I’m pretty sure they do), Baboom is drowning and pretty much any college kid with 1,000 or more Facebook friends has a “promotion company”.

THE FORMULA

1. Start “promotion” company

2. Get photographer

3. Get cheap drink specials

4. Get horrible “Top 40/Mashup/Electro” DJ that will play for next to nothing

5. Spam, Spam, Spam

Seriously? This is what this town has become? It’s so sad. Incase you guys haven’t noticed by clubs reincarnating nights every 3 months, this formula is FUCKING DEAD. Nobody and I mean nobody cares anymore. It’s all been done before, the drinks don’t need to be cheaper, and nobody cares about getting on your guest list, nobody. If I get another invite from Dawe saying “THIS WILL BE THE BIGGEST NIGHT IN ORLANDO” I am going to jump out the window with Ron Browz.

There is no reason to re-post your event on Facebook ONCE A FUCKING HOUR, EVERYDAY ALL DAY. We know what the flyer looks like, we know how ‘awesome’ its going to be, and we also know we will never go because you annoy the absolute fucking shit out of us. Let your night speak for itself or better yet LET YOUR DJs SPEAK FOR YOUR NIGHT. Is that not the reason these nights flourished in the first place? What happened to actually going somewhere not for the cheap drinks, but because the DJ actually kills it? Oh thats right, every college kid with a trust fund gets an Apple, Serato and cheap equipment and is all the sudden a “DJ” and takes all the other DJs nights because they say they’ll play pretty much for free and play whatever the bar/club owner wants leaving actual talent, originality, pride, and loyalty by the club to be lost.

And since we are on the subject of dead, can we just go ahead and admit that NO ONE will ever have a successful night at Fusian? I’m pretty sure EVERY promotion company has had a night there on EVERY night of the week and it has always failed after no more than a month. I like the venue and the sound system is great but it’s just too far away from anything to even give a shit and the manager will pretty much give a night to anybody who says they can pack the place out, which they never seem to be able to do. Even after one of the biggest scandals in the history of Orlando, the Casey Anthony saga, and pictures of her at Fusian partying turned up, you STILL can’t get people in there.

Something new and fresh needs to happen in the Orlando nightlife hustle, because meanwhile the little bars are all laughing at you and thriving. Places like Cleos, Caseys, Tatame, BBQ-Bar and even I-Bar have seen a resurrection simply because people are tired of the bullshit and just want somewhere to go no matter what the drink specials are, the name of the night, the theme, etc. They go because they know the music is going to be good, the bartenders pour a strong ass drink, aren’t a complete stuck-up cunt/asshole, and they aren’t surrounded by complete tools wearing Ed Hardy/Affliction/Smet/insert douchebag clothing line to go with their pointy shoes, ripped up jeans and blown out hair.

Dawe and myself hope to change the game here soon with something new, fresh, original and actually worth going out to. In the meantime, don’t think we are just sitting back waiting for something to happen. Dawe has a money maker out on I-Drive a couple nights a week, Ice Bar, while I DJ every Thursday at this little dive bar near Full Sail and couldn’t be happier about it. I get to play whatever I want, am complimented for it and there is no stress about attendance numbers, flyers, and all that other bullshit you guys deal with downtown.

I hope this blog has either pissed you off and/or opened your eyes, made you re-think your strategies and will hopefully make you step your game up.

This mixtape is what his second album should have been. He finally ditches all the edited lyrics and kiddie songs for some real shit. He has obviously taken all the criticism on his lyrics and stepped his game up seeing by the track “POW” where he has a Bone Thugs type flow and actually kills the game.

Say hello to Young Jeezys new mixtape released via his official site/blog USDA2DAY.com

Now say hello to the same mixtape without the DJ on ANY of the tracks.

You’re welcome. Moving along…

I posted the new Jay-Z song, D.O.A., and now I found this little gem apparently with Premier on the beat.

Jay-Z – Can’t Cheat Death (Produced by DJ Premier)

Now for a good news/bad news track from Lil’ Wayne:

Good News: He goes for it on this track. Flow is real mean and haven’t heard a track like this since dude fucked up and picked up a guitar.

Bad News: The track obviously forgot to put ‘no homo’ on the end of the track title because its allllll about Kobe Bryant.  Weezy F has clearly chosen his side in this years NBA Finals in a track that has him comparing himself to Black Mamba.

Lil’ Wayne – Kobe Bryant

Rick Ross hopped on the Kid Cudi sleeping banger “Sky Might Fall” a couple weeks back and brought his signature 305 raspy flow to the Kid from Clevelands song.

Kid Cudi Feat. Rick Ross – Sky Might Fall

Bay Area rappers The Pack have put out an absolute banger featuring Dawe’s favorite acapella to mix…

Last but not least, is in my opinion, the rookie of the year out of Atlanta, Yung L.A.

So if you’re a DJ and you don’t know about whitefolksgetcrunk.com then you have a lot of catching up to do and have obviously never checked out any of the sites on our blogroll.

Well yours truly was lucky enough to land himself on the front page of the prestigious blog for a remix I did that I actually thought would never take off, hence me calling it the “Super Played Out” Remix because Thuggish Ruggish Bone & Boom Boom Pow are 2 of the most remixed songs on the fucking internet.

Just sayin’.
