Biggest NYE parties across the county:

Posted by Brian 'Docta' Dawe On December - 31 - 2008 1 COMMENT

I am going to be DJing a private party in Winter Park tonight, so unfortunately you will not be able to catch a Docta Dawe NYE set this year unless you are one of the invited guests. SOOO I decided to compile a list of the top 5 biggest NYE parties going down all over the county tonight….

justicenye.jpg

Justice NYE set!! This is my top pick for NYE ‘09 – if I could be anywhere, this is where it would be….

djamtravisbarker.jpg

DJ AM & Travis Barker put on quite the show and this should be no exception. This event is also being broadcasted live in various other venues throughout the country, all together 15,000 people will be hearing the sounds of DJ AM & Travis Barker live tonight.

samantharonsonlohan.jpg

Samantha Ronson and girlfriend Lindsy Lohan will be at the legendary Mansion in South Beach tonight…

nyepure.jpg

This is semi-interesting, it wouldn’t really appeal to me, but I guess some people will be interested in seeing Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz host NYE at Pure in Vegas. I’m sure this will a celebrity packed event and one of the highlights of NYE in Vegas this year.

ladygaga.jpg

Webster Hall is one of New Yorks most prestigeous venues, and this year they have a live performance from Lady Gaga… interesting.

wutangnye.jpg

If I left this one out Kaypee would kill me… Sonar in Baltimore is bringing in the New Year with the Wu! featuring Method Man, Rza, Gza, Ghostface, Raekwon, Masta Killa, U-God, Cappadonna & Inspecta Deck.

As far as Orlando NYE parties go, nothing has really stood out. Antigua/Church St. Entertainment is having their huge annual block party with the 50ft Orange ball drop on Church Street, along with a “huge fireworks display”. Knight Klub in the UCF area has been heavily promoting their $15 Open Bar NYE party. Orlando Hip-Hop ledgends Sol.illaquists of Sound will be at The Social tonight…

oh and a little NYE side note via The Orlando Weekly…

“Orlando, Say Bye Bye to: MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, Spike, CMT, Pure Country, Logo, Palladia, MTV2, MTV Hits, MTV Jams, MTV Tr3s, Noggin, Nick 2, Nicktoons, Spike, The N, TV Land, VH1, VH1 Classic and VH1 Soul.

Hope you didn’t plan on watching Daily Show or Spongebob … ever again.

Your awesome friends at Bright House (a Time Warner Subsidiary) announced tonight (I’m blogging this past midnight for ya’ll bitches’ info) that it’s all going bye-bye cause Viacom, the mega-corp that owns those channels – Bright House is just the provider that brings Viacom’s product into your home – allegedly asked for “exorbitant” rate increases and the two couldn’t come to terms.

This starts at 12:01 a.m. Jan. 1st, right after the ball drops.

Hope you didn’t plan on planting those out-of-school kids in front of the tube.

And no, they’re not coming back. At least not, like, soon. That’s the wonder and joy of living in a completely de-regulated society of megacorps. It’s the bed we made ourselves so learn to love it.

You can let Bright House know how much you ABSOLUTELY LOVE this situation by calling 1-866-309-3279. Otherwise, time to weigh exactly how much you’re willing to pay DirecTV for the privilege of shit like Bromance.

Good thing I have Comcast!!!

Open letter to you, the reader

Posted by Kaypee On December - 29 - 2008 17 COMMENTS

I hate you and I love you. Sometimes I feel we should talk more about music you might be interested in, or places we could go at nighttime. Then I realize, I don’t know you, not emotionally or physically. Our relationship is a lie, a sham, and a fraud. That’s why I hate you. A mutual friend of ours, I’m not naming names, told me that you might want to see me New Year’s Day night at Stereo. What if I don’t show? How will we ever fix this faulty romance? I mean, it’s not like you can’t get to my myspace through the link in the contributors box. That’s sarcasm. I figured you’d pick up on that. You are smart. That’s why I love you. And you are clever. I like that too.

We’ve had our good times though, haven’t we? I’ve shown you videos you may not have seen before. I might have made you laugh with my cynicism and biting wit. And if you didn’t laugh, you probably just didn’t get it. I understand.

I have fought with you too. Many times. I’m always right, if you haven’t learned that already. But you are still faithful, and I suppose I am to you as well.

The purpose of this letter is to let you know, dear so-and-so, that I appreciate you and your comradery. Anyway, just a reminder… and this is no big deal… but… my birthday is March 2 and I want a snake.

NOTORIOUS Mixtapes.

Posted by Brian 'Docta' Dawe On December - 28 - 2008 ADD COMMENTS

If you didn’t know, Notorious BIG is my favorite rapper ever. I grew up on East coast hip hop. I was lucky enough to have a neighborhood friend in elementary school who traveled to see family in New York every few months. He would always come back with a new mixtape from DJ Clue?, DJ Red Alert, Tony Touch, or some other New Your DJ, and I would study the track lists non-stop. This was before the internet, around ‘93, ‘94, and I knew that the tapes I had would be the only source for the music I was hearing. Every once in a while I would hear one of the tracks from the mixtapes on 102 Jamz, usually during the night mix show called “The Thunderstorm” with DJ’s Twice as Nice… who remembers that piece of Orlando history?!?

Anyways, If it wasn’t for those classic mixtapes I may never have been a DJ today. At the time I didn’t understand how the DJs were making the songs blend together, but I had a strong desire at 12 years old to figure out how they were doing it, and how I could do it myself. I was very lucky to be exposed to artists like Grand Puba, Mobb Deep, Junior Mafia, Notorious BIG, Method Man, ODB, before most anyone else I knew had. I’ll never forget the first time I heard “Notorious Thugs” on a NYC mixtape, MONTHS before Life After Death came out. I remember saying “Fuck!! Biggie is rapping fast like Bone Thugs!!!”.

I meant for this blog to be about two things, the classic mixtape, which exposed me to some of my favorite artists for the first time (since they were not immediately embraced by Orlando hip-hop radio) – and Notorious BIG. The movie “Notorious” is due out in theaters January 16, 2009. I am really looking forward to seeing this movie, here is the trailer:
[display_podcast]

The thing that got my mind thinking about classic mixtapes, and The Notorious BIG is the long lost Biggie freestyle demo tape that premiered last night on Mr. Cee’s radio show on Hot 97 in New York. This is the demo that got Biggie signed with Bad Boy, and it is ridiculous. This is the first new BIG material I have heard in years and it has me really excited about this movie, and about the possibility there is more rare tracks like this out there that Puffy is holding out on.

Notorious B.I.G. Demo Tape – Microphone Murderer (Live on Hot 97 12-27-09) (zshare)

Junior Mafia – Get Money Remix (DJ Clue? Spring Time Stickup version 1996) (zshare)

nightlivingdead1.jpg
Notorious B.I.G. – The Night Of The Living Dead Mixtape (zshare)

I have some old mixtape GOLD deep in my Mom’s garage – DJ Clue? mixtapes where he actually BLENDS and SCRATCHES the records. Maybe one day I’ll dig them out and convert them to MP3s….  If you have any, or know where I can get them PLEASE let me know.

Everyday, each of us sees countless ads. We are confronted by countless causes we are supposed to care about or be AWARE of. Usually, we become aware and then brush it off. Probably apathy. But sometimes, something catches our eyes and makes us want to do good.

Enter the Girl effect.

I fucking hate Christmas. This year, in particular, has been one problem after another. This is the first year I will not be with my dad. So, being the cynical scrooge I am, I give you the gift of laughter. It’s like a Furby but less creepy. Merry Whatever.

Treasure Fingers is yet another Saturday/Thursday phase two booking request rejection, but Pauly Crush and the original S/T crew was able to lock him into their “Pulp” party tonight at Club Czar in Tampa. I have been a fan of Treasure Fingers for a while now. His disco flavored track “Cross The Dancefloor” has been a dance party favorite, and his distinct sound got him signed to my favorite record label in the world, Fools Gold.

Pulp is at Club Czar in Tampa, FL

Here is something a little different for your Friday night. If you decide to skip the drive to Tampa tonight I DARE you to step foot in Antigua. It is a mostly urban crowd, but it is worth it to see Orlando’s most legendary DJ in action. DJ Magic Mike is one of the most pivotal Miami bass producers of all time, and still the greatest DJ in the city. This man knows how to work a crowd, dropping banger after banger. This is a night that Orlando takes for granted, the opportunity to see one of the best on a weekly basis… but don’t get it wrong, this night is PACKED ever week, with 1000+ people guaranteed. MC Panek complements Magic very nicely on the mic holding down the hosting duties. This party is one that everyone should experience in this city, but especially if you are a DJ because cuts like Magic Mike’s aren’t seen in this city very often.
